The decisive stage of the 2025 Men’s Volleyball Nations League is starting in a couple of days, as France will be the defending champions, having beaten Japan in the 2024 final. FIVB has decided to expand the competition to 18 teams starting from this edition. Each team plays a total of 12 matches in the preliminary round, with the top seven teams qualifying for the playoffs in addition to the host team. The Netherlands finished last in that round and was relegated to the Challenger Cup. The playoffs run with the usual system of quarterfinals, semifinals, and then the final. All of the matches are played with the best-of-five sets format.
The FIVB Men’s Nations League is an annual championship that was first held in 2018, and this is the 7th edition of the tournament. France and Russia are tied for the most Men’s NL championships with two titles each, while Brazil and Poland have won the trophy only once. The United States has three silver medals and one bronze medal, but has never won the title.

The Japanese team won eight matches and lost four to finish in 4th place in the preliminary round. Japan has reached the playoffs in three consecutive editions after failing to qualify in the first three, and they won the silver and bronze medals in the last two years.
