The Championship League was originally an invitational tournament that started in 2008. Matchroom Sport decided to introduce a ranking version of the tournament in the 2020-21 season. This year, the ranking tournament returns for its sixth edition.
A total of 128 players will be divided into 32 groups of four. Only the top player from each group will advance to the second stage of the competition. Those 32 players will then be split into eight groups of four once again, with each group winner moving on to the next round.
The competition wraps up with a final group stage, with the remaining eight players competing across two groups. The winners of each group will face off in a best-of-five final, with the champion earning a spot in that season’s Champion of Champions tournament.
Ali Carter will be returning as the defending champion. He will look to become the first Championship League winner to hold on to his title in the short history of the competition.
