Men’s American Basketball Championship 2025 Format & Overview

The FIBA AmeriCup is back to its usual schedule of holding a tournament once every four years. The competition consists of 12 of the best American teams. The teams are split equally into three groups of four teams each. Each team faces all the other teams in their groups once, with the top two teams qualifying directly for the quarterfinals, in addition to the two best third-placed teams. The playoffs run in the usual single-elimination matches after that until a champion is crowned.

History of the Men’s AmeriCup

The FIBA AmeriCup was first held in 1980 in Puerto Rico as the Tournament of the Americas, and the home team won the first-ever title. This will be the 20th edition of the competition, and it will be the first time for Nicaragua to host the event. There are six teams that have won the AmeriCup Championship in history, as the United States has won by far the most gold medals (7). Brazil comes in second place with four titles, while Argentina and Puerto Rico have won three titles each.

Last Five Finals & Winners

Here are the results of the last five finals of the FIBA AmeriCup, with Argentina being the only team to win the title twice in the last two decades:

    Brazil @ 3.25 (9/4)

Brazil was three points away from winning the title on their home soil in the last edition, but Argentina was more clutch in the end. That was the second silver medal for the Brazilians in the last five editions, as their last FIBA AmeriCup title was in 2009 in Puerto Rico. Brazil has the roster to win it all this time, but it still won’t be easy.

    USA @ 4.0 (3/1)

It’s not a surprise to see the United States as the No. 1-ranked team on the FIBA world ranking. Team USA won the bronze medal in the last edition, but they won the title before that in 2017. The United States came back on track with four consecutive wins in the FIBA AmeriCup qualifiers, and they will aim to keep the momentum going and win their 8th title.

    Canada @ 4.75 (15/4)

Canada is the No. 6 team in the world, and they have some great players on the roster, especially after adding the talented youngster, Kyshawn George, who had a pretty good rookie year for the Washington Wizards this year. Team Canada won the first four games in the AmeriCup qualifiers but lost the last two. They still finished on top of their group, and they will be one of the main contenders for the title this year.

    Puerto Rico @ 6.0 (5/1)

Puerto Rico has received a huge boost in their FIBA AmeriCup 2025 odds to win the title lately, as the NBA star, Jose Alvarado, has confirmed his participation with the team this year. They have a very solid squad, and they gave the USA a hard time in their last qualifier game and lost by one point, so they are capable of competing with the best teams in this tournament. They last won the AmeriCup 30 years ago, but they will have good winning chances this time.

    Argentina @ 7.50 (13/2)

Argentina has been the most successful team in this tournament in the 21st century. They have reached the final in eight of the last 10 editions and won it three times, and they have won medals in all of those 10 editions. The Argentine Soul is missing some of their key players, but they still have excellent players, like Nicolas Brussino, Juan Fernandez, and Gonzalo Corbalan. They are the No. 8 team in the world and the tournament defending champions.

The best bookmakers in South America have the United States as one of the top contenders for the title. Team USA is on an incredible 15-game winning streak, having won the 2024 Olympic Games after beating Brazil, Serbia, and France in the playoffs. USA’s roster has some talented players who have NBA experience, like Javonte Smart, Jahmi’us Ramsey, and Langston Galloway. Team USA didn’t bring their A-list team, but they have a balanced roster with a good mix between youth and experienced players.

The Colombian team has had some promising results in the last few games of the AmeriCup qualifiers, having won three of their last five games and lost two tough games to Argentina. The Dominican Republic has a better team, but they aren’t at their best form right now, having lost three of their last six games. This will be the first-ever encounter between the two teams, and we expect Colombia to make it a close game.

Canada vs Venezuela: Canada (-16.5) Points Handicap @ 1.90 (9/10)

Canada has one of the best rosters in the tournament, and they have dominated Venezuela historically, as they beat them in four of their last five games, and they covered that 16.5-point spread in three consecutive games against the Venezuelan team. Venezuela lost 23 of their last 30 games in all competitions, and they shouldn’t be a big challenge to this Canadian team.
