The latest edition of the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship has seen an expanded 32-team format, up from 24, and we’d expect tougher competition with the increased numbers his year. The tournament unfolds in two phases, so let’s take a look at the format.
The first stage of the tournament will feature a Pool Phase from September 12–17. The 32 teams are divided into eight groups (A to H) of four teams each, competing in a round-robin format. Each team plays three matches, with the top two from each group advancing. Pools A, D, E, and H are hosted at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, while Pools B, C, F, and G play at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
After the pool phase comes the knockout rounds, and they will take place between September 19 & 28. Sixteen teams qualified for this stage, and they enter a single-elimination bracket, starting with the Round of 16, followed by quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final in Manila. All knockout matches take place at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, includes the finals and third place games on September 28.

The FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship was launched in 1949, and it’s a big event when it comes to international men’s volleyball, second only to the Olympics. There wasn’t a regular format for the tournament, but the organizers adopted a four-year cycle from 1962 until 2022, and then a biennial format in 2025. The Soviet Union leads the historical medal table with six titles, followed by Italy, which won its fourth title recently.
