Italian Open 2025: Tennis Event Details

The journey to the Roland-Garros continues as the European clay-court swing makes its next stop at Rome’s historic Foro Italico for the combined ATP and WTA Masters 1000 tournament.

The Internazionali BNL d’Italia, as it’s known locally, welcomes back Italy’s own Jannik Sinner, the men’s world number one. Sinner returns to action after serving a three-month suspension following a settlement with WADA over two positive doping tests in 2024.

Flying the flag for Italy in the women’s draw is world number five Jasmine Paolini, the Paris 2024 gold medallist. The 29-year-old, who will also defend her doubles crown with Sara Errani, will be one of the most popular WTA Italy 2025 betting picks for sure.

The 2025 ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome will feature a total prize fund of €8,055,385, with the singles champion set to take home €985,030. The WTA champion, on the other hand, will pocket €877,390.

ℹ️ Tournament: ATP & WTA Tours (Masters 1000), 2025 Italian Open
🎾 Venue: Foro Italico, Rome, Italy (Outdoor Clay)
🗓️ Dates: Tuesday, May 6 to Sunday, May 18, 2025

Understanding the Italian Open Tennis Tournament

The Italian Open began in 1930, and the first edition was played in Milan. Foro Italico, the present venue of the competition, hosted the tournament for the first time in 1935. It became a professional tournament in 1969.

The tournament has been an ATP Masters 1000 event since 1990. It’s also a part of the WTA 1000 calendar now. In both the ATP and WTA draws, the top 32 players will receive direct byes into the second round.

Italian Open History & Court Specifics

A closer look at the tournament’s history and court specifics is crucial for making the best Italian Open 2025 predictions. The Italian Open was once a flagship event on the Grand Prix Tennis Tour. It became part of the ATP Championship Series Single Week in 1990, inheriting its place from the top Grand Prix events, and has held a spot in the tour’s highest category ever since.

With 10 championships, Rafael Nadal is the most successful man in the history of the event. Among women, Chris Evert is the most successful, having won this event five times.

Currently, the tournament runs at Rome’s Foro Italico, a large tennis facility with 18 clay courts, nine of which are used for the Italian Open. Foro Italico is not the slowest clay surface out there. Players can expect the ball to move faster than in Monte-Carlo, for example, but it isn’t as fast as it is in Madrid. The pace is moderate and the bounce is high, with conditions most reflecting those of Roland-Garros. That’s why players like Rafael Nadal and Iga Swiatek have enjoyed playing here.

Sinner and Alcaraz will dominate 2025 ATP Rome predictions as they stand well ahead of the field in the current odds. Alexander Zverev is a distant third, even though he enters the fray as the defending champion.

Jack Draper, fresh off a near-miss in Madrid, will have to battle through a tricky Rome draw, but the Brit ranks fourth in the betting odds. Casper Ruud sits fifth, though odds across Italian mobile betting apps suggest the Norwegian is a distant outsider.

Sinner heads the seeding in Rome, but it’s impossible to ignore the question marks hanging over his form. The home crowd will welcome him back with open arms. However, staying out of action for three months could mean a slow start for the Italian star. It’s not just form that could trouble Sinner—his quarter is stacked with threats, including Davidovich Fokina, Tiafoe, and clay-court menace Francisco Cerúndolo.

Ruud is a potential quarter-final opponent for Sinner, who could also spell trouble for the local hero. With Zverev struggling for consistency and Alcaraz still battling fitness issues, Ruud could emerge as the more formidable contender in the Italian capital over the coming weeks.

Although Ruud is coming off a Madrid Open triumph on Sunday, the tight schedule is unlikely to deter him. The 26-year-old tends to peak at this point in the season, and another standout performance in Rome may well be on the cards.

Ruud was in dominant form in Madrid, losing just one set while cruising past Francisco Cerundolo, Taylor Fritz, and Daniil Medvedev. He has now won 21 of his 27 matches on the ATP Tour this season. Draper, whom Ruud defeated in the final, is still adjusting to clay, and with the tournament looking wide open, Ruud has a real chance to make a statement in Rome.

He’s never made it to the final in Rome, but he has had three semi-final runs here. His strong record on clay has also prompted us to highlight him in our Italian Open 2025 predictions. Ruud has won 13 titles in his career so far, with only one on a non-clay surface.

Gabriel Diallo and Marcos Giron finally get to meet for the first time in an ATP Tour match after their Delray Beach Open 2025 clash got canceled in February. Diallo has won four of his last five matches, including a standout quarterfinal run in Madrid last week. The Canadian’s run in Madrid was unexpected, however, given his earlier struggles on clay.

Giron, on the contrary, enters Rome on a rough patch, having lost four of his last five matches. He fell in straight sets to Aleksandar Vukic in the opening round at Estoril last week and, although he pushed Andrey Rublev to three tight sets in the second round last year, he has never advanced beyond the third round in Rome.

While the bookmakers have Giron as the underdog, we see things differently. Diallo impressed with his run in Madrid, but the physical and mental toll may catch up with him in Rome. With his greater experience, Giron has the tools to push this match the distance and take advantage of Diallo’s fatigue.

At the top of the odds sits three-time Rome champion Iga Swiatek, trailed by Madrid Open winner Aryna Sabalenka. Coco Gauff, who finished runner-up in Madrid, ranks third, with teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva and Karolina Muchova completing the top five favorites.

While Sabalenka is attracting plenty of attention after her Madrid win, her road in Rome appears trickier than Swiatek’s, who, when firing on all cylinders, is unrivaled on clay.

Swiatek’s dominance on clay is well established—she has lifted the trophy in Rome three times in the past four years, including a commanding win over Sabalenka in last year’s final. She’s also already a four-time French Open champion, all by the age of 23.

The conditions in Rome suit the world number two perfectly, and with a relatively comfortable early draw, she should have time to settle in.

Caroline Dolehide and Sorana Cirstea will hope to set up a second round meeting with Diana Shnaidar in the second round at each other’s expense. Cirstea has returned to the Tour this year after a long injury layoff.

Cirstea, who crashed out of the Madrid Open first round, is the more experienced player, but form is not on her side. Dolehide hasn’t been dazzling, but she’s been steadier across recent outings.

Casper Ruud and Iga Swiatek have been in outstanding form on clay, and we believe they are the frontrunners for the Italian Open title.
