McIlroy has established himself as the clear man to beat this year. Last major, he got the monkey off his back by finally completing the career Grand Slam and winning the Masters. Since then, he’s continued to be impressive, most recently bagging The Players Championship.

Rounding out the top-five favorites is defending champion Xander Schauffele. The 31-year-old was impressive last year, but has been scratchy this season, with his best finish a T8 at the Masters.

The Northern Irishman is not only in career-best form and playing with supreme freedom after claiming the Grand Slam earlier this year, but he’s also got a brilliant track record on this course. At Quail Hollows, McIlroy has a searing nine top-10 finishes in 13 appearances. Of these, four saw him hoist the trophy. Given his fine form and strong track record, odds of 5.00 (4/1) still feel quite enticing for a bet on McIlroy.

Name a more consistent golfer over the past two years other than Scottie Scheffler. We’ll be here awhile, because it’s not possible. The American has been a model of consistency, and betting on him to finish top five just feels like taking candy from a baby at this stage.
Scheffler has top-five finishes in three of his last four events – and the one he missed wasn’t far off, with a T8 finish. Overall, he’s picked up an outrageous 17 top-five placements since the start of last year, and with the form he’s in right now, there’s no reason to believe he won’t do so again this weekend.
