La Liga 2025/26 Format & Overview
La Liga is Spain’s top football league, featuring a promotion and relegation system to and from the Segunda Division. The league has been using the 20-team format since 1997, with the team scoring the most points at the end of the season crowned as the champion. The bottom three teams get relegated directly to the Segunda Division, while the top five teams qualify for the UCL, with the 6th and 7th teams qualifying for the UEL and the 8th team going to the Conference League.
The Spanish La Liga had a very interesting relegation battle last season, as the difference between the 18th and 13th teams was only two points. Leganes, Las Palmas, and Valladolid got relegated to the Segunda Division, while Levante, Elche, and Real Oviedo got promoted to La Liga this season.
History of the Spanish Top Football Championship
This will be the 95th edition of the Spanish La Liga, as the league was first held in 1929, and Barcelona won the title. Real Madrid have won by far the most La Liga titles (36), while Barca come in second place with 28 titles, and Atletico Madrid won 11 championships, most recently in the 2020–21 La Liga season.

25/26 La Liga Odds & Favorites
Here’s a look at the latest 2025–26 La Liga winner odds and the favorites to win the title from the bookies with the best football odds:
Real Madrid @ 1.80 (4/5)
There are a lot of changes in Real Madrid this season, with a new head coach in charge, as Xabi Alonso came as a replacement for Carlo Ancelotti after a disappointing season for Los Blancos. Real Madrid have also made some big transfers in the pre-season, acquiring Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, and Alvaro Carreras, while Luka Modric is the most notable player that left in free agency.
Barcelona @ 2.10 (11/10)
The Blaugrana are the defending champions, having won five of the last 10 editions. Hansi Flick put the team back on track last season, as Barca won the La Liga and Copa del Rey titles, and they lost in a dramatic semi-final matchup to Inter Milan. Barcelona scored 102 goals in the league last season, which is the most goals scored by a team in the last eight seasons, as Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, and Raphinha were all in top form throughout the season.
Atletico Madrid @ 9.0 (8/1)
Atletico Madrid have been the most active team in the transfer window among the top teams, as they acquired Alex Baena, Matteo Ruggeri, Johnny Cardoso, Thiago Almada, and David Hancko, so they have covered most of their weaknesses from last season, and they are looking to win the title again after a four-year absence. Los Colchoneros had the second-best defense in the league last season, and if they overcome their offensive struggles, they will be big contenders for the title.
Athletic Bilbao @ 51.0 (50/1)
The Lions finished in fourth place last season after 11 years of absence from the top four. Athletic Bilbao managed to keep Nico Williams, as he signed an eight-year contract with the team after Barcelona’s big interest in signing him. They haven’t made any big transfers so far, and they have lost five consecutive pre-season games, so it’s not looking good for the Lions going into the new season. Bilbao will face a big challenge from Villarreal, Real Betis, and Real Sociedad for that fourth spot.
Villarreal @ 51.0 (50/1)
Villarreal are coming off a big season for them after securing fifth place, which gave them a Champions League spot for this season. Their offense was really good, but they had the second-worst defense among the top 10 teams, so if they improve that part, they will be in good shape to finish even higher. The Yellow Submarine has been inconsistent in the pre-season so far, winning only one of their seven games.
Spanish La Liga 2025/26 Outright Winner Predictions
Real Madrid to Win Outright @ 1.80 (4/5)
1 (50%)
(50%) 1
The best online bookmakers in Spain have Real Madrid as favorites to start the season, as usual. Los Blancos had a lot of issues due to injuries last season, especially in the defense, but the addition of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen should improve that part. Real Madrid have won La Liga in four of the last five seasons after a season loss, so they might do it again with a better squad this season.
Real Madrid have reached the Club World Cup semifinals in Xabi Alonso’s first competition with the team, and they should improve even more after he spent some time with them. Barcelona’s transfer window has been less than optimal so far, and Los Blancos should take advantage of that.
High-Odds Pick: Atletico Madrid @ 9.0 (8/1)
2 (100%)
0
There’s some nice value on Atletico Madrid winning the title this season. The addition of Alex Baena to their offense will be huge, especially since he will play alongside players like Antoine Griezmann, Julian Alvarez, and Alexander Sorloth. Atleti have also improved their already great defense by adding David Hancko, which increases their squad depth. They had a good end to last season, having won six games and drawn one of their last nine matches, so they should build on that.
La Liga 25/26 Season Betting Tips
Kylian Mbappe to be Top Goalscorer @ 1.80 (4/5)
2 (100%)
0
Kylian Mbappe finished on top of the La Liga 24-25 top scorers list with 31 goals in his debut season for the team. The French attacker had four more goals than the second-place player, Robert Lewandowski, and he should score more goals after spending more time with the team and having more chemistry now. Mbappe is Real Madrid’s future and key player, so he can finish as the top scorer again, even if Los Blancos couldn’t win the league.
Elche to be Relegated @ 2.0 (Evs)
2 (100%)
0
The La Liga betting odds for Elche to be relegated this season are really good, especially since they didn’t make any notable transfers so far, and they even lost one of their best players, Nicolas Mercau. Elche got promoted to La Liga this season, but they were struggling offensively in the Segunda Division last season, as they didn’t have a single player in the top 25 goal scorers. They are in desperate need of wingers, and with their current situation, they might not have many chances to avoid relegation.
