Bovada Review
Best Crypto Bookmaker for Punters in the US
Bovada is an offshore bookie that operates exclusively in the United States. It was launched in 2011 and has since become the top option for punters in states where betting is still unregulated. The bookmaker is also one of the rare platforms in the country that accepts cryptocurrency.
In this review, I will tell you about Bovada’s legal status in the US and what to expect when you register an account. This includes analysis of odds, payment options, betting variety, website, bonuses and promotions, customer support, and more.

Bovada Compared to Other Market Leaders
Bovada compares favorably to other market leaders in the United States like FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, PointsBet, and BetRivers. It is the only bookie from the bunch that supports crypto payments. It also has a broader coverage of sports and more novelty bets. Bovada’s welcome offer is more attractive, especially for crypto deposits. Others either offer only second-chance bets (BetMGM, PointsBet, BetRivers) or have a low deposit match percentage with high rollover requirements (DraftKings).
In other departments, Bovada is behind the competition. It doesn’t have a mobile app, which is something all of these other sportsbooks offer. Its payout of 93% is among the worst, being topped by FanDuel (94%), Caesars (94%), PointsBet (95%), and BetRivers (95%). The maximum profit of $250,000 is the lowest compared to the rest of the group.
About Bovada and Harp Media BV
Bovada officially launched in 2011, but the history of the bookie goes back a lot farther. In early 2000, Alwyn Morris, a former Canadian kayaker, established an online gambling brand, Bodog. The brand quickly took off, but went on to face legal obstacles in the United States. In 2007, Morris went on to sell Bodog to Morris Mohawk Gaming Group (MMGG), a company registered in the Mohawk Territory of Kahnawake in Quebec, Canada.
As Bodog expanded its operations internationally and obtained local licenses, including in the UK, MMGG wanted to protect the brand from the legal scrutiny it faced. In 2011, it blocked US users from accessing Bodog’s website and launched a new brand named Bovada. Punters were given an option to transfer their account.
At some point, Bovada operations were transferred to Salmon River Technologies Ltd, which was in possession of the Kahnawake Gaming License. The company voluntarily gave up the license in 2016. The bookmaker continued operating without a license for a brief period before the brand was sold to Harp Media B.V.
Bovada is currently jointly operated by Harp Media B.V. and Hove Media. There is not a lot of publicly available information about the two companies or their ties. Harp Media B.V. is registered in Curaçao, and there is no mention of the company holding a license. According to the document shared on the Bovada website, Hove Media holds an Anjouan Gaming Board license (L 11549 / HM) from the Island of Anjouan, Union of Comoros. The document states that the license was valid until 15th May, 2024.
Bovada primarily targets punters from the United States. It focuses on states that still haven’t legalized online gambling. The bookie appeals to crypto users, supporting cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum and offering bonuses for crypto payments.
Due to its unregulated status in the United States, the bookmaker avoids traditional marketing campaigns. Instead, it focuses on affiliate marketing, pop-up ads, and word-of-mouth. It also occasionally teams up with content creators. One example is YouTuber Dustin Wilson, known better as @justdustin. Wilson created the world’s largest Plinko board in partnership with Bovada and documented the process in a video shared on Bovada’s YouTube channel.
Where You Can Bet With Bovada
Bovada exclusively operates in the United States as an offshore bookie. Its website mentions a license from the Union of the Comoros and the Central Reserve Authority of Western Sahara. Access to the bookmaker is blocked for all other countries.
Bovada stopped operations in many states after receiving cease-and-desist letters from regulatory bodies. In 33 other states, the bookie operates in the grey zone through its offshore license.
Regulatory Track Records
Bovada faced a series of legal issues in the United States in recent years. It received cease-and-desist letters from more than a dozen states, all of which have legalized online betting. In the majority of cases, the bookmaker withdrew from the state and stopped offering its services to punters.
One of the most recent legal challenges came from the Illinois Gaming Board in February 2025. The regulatory body asked Bovada to stop its activity in the state and threatened “civil or criminal penalties.” At the time of conducting this review, the sportsbook has yet to stop operating in this state.
Bovada was issued a $50,000 fine by the Tennessee Sports Wagering Council in October 2024 for operating without a proper license and ignoring multiple cease-and-desist letters. In November of the same year, the bookie closed all the accounts belonging to Tennessee residents, returned available balances, and blocked its website in the state. There is no mention of whether Bovada ever paid the fine.
Odds
Bovada posts odds several months ahead of kick-off for high-profile games and futures. The odds for the 2025 NFL Christmas Day contest between the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos were made available more than six months before kick-off.
For other events, the sportsbook has a defined schedule shared on its website. Points spread and totals for NFL games are posted seven days before kick-off, and moneyline is shared on Mondays. Odds for NBA games are posted the day before at 5:00 p.m., and lines for MLB games are shared the day before at 10:00 p.m. For the NHL, they are available the day before the game at 2:00 p.m., and soccer games receive their odds at least one month ahead. UFC odds are posted as soon as the fight is announced.
American odds are the default, but users can switch to decimal and fractional. I was able to change the format at the top of the page anytime I clicked on the “Sports” section. My selection was updated straight away without the need to refresh the page. When decimal format is selected, I can usually see odds displayed to three decimals for spreads and totals. The odds for outcomes come in combinations of two and three decimals.
Anytime odds change, the bookie presents it in a flashing animation. The increased odds turn green temporarily; lowered odds turn red. Users are unable to access historical odds or use any built-in odds comparison tools.
The bookmaker provides a basic explanation for the way cash out prices are derived, saying the amount is calculated “based on current odds.” However, it doesn’t have a published methodology for voids, palpables, and settlement rules. It also doesn’t explain how margins are calculated or provide implied probability tools.
The margins are fairly consistent across major American sports (NBA, NFL, NHL, and MLB) at around 5%. Margins for other sports are higher and include 6.5% for soccer, just below 7% for tennis, and 8.5% for Esports.

Payment Options
The list of Bovada’s payment methods includes cards, bank transfers, vouchers, MatchPay, and cryptocurrencies. At the moment, the bookie supports the following crypto tokens: Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin Lightning, Bitcoin SV, Litecoin, Ethereum, and USD Tether. There are no e-wallets like Skrill, Neteller, or PayPal available.
- Visa/Mastercard can only be used for deposits, which are instant. The minimum deposit amount is $20; the maximum deposit amount is $1,500. The first deposit is free, and all subsequent transactions come with a 15.9% fee or higher.
- Bank transfers have a minimum deposit of $50 and a maximum of $450. You can withdraw a minimum $1,500 and a maximum of $9,500. The processing time is 10 to 15 business days, and you can only make one per month.
- MatchPay has a minimum of $10 and a maximum of $2,000 for deposits and withdrawals. Payouts are instant with this option, and you can have two transactions per day.
- Vouchers are a convenient option for withdrawals. Users can generate a Bovada voucher for a maximum amount of $3,000 and then sell it to another bettor. This option is instant and has no limit in terms of frequency.
- Crypto transactions come without fees, although the bookie indicates you might be charged by the exchange or your cryptocurrency wallet. The maximum deposit is $5,000, and the maximum withdrawal ranges from $2,500 to $9,500, depending on the token. There are weekly limits to how much money you can take out with this method.
Users can also send each other funds using the Player Transfer option. These transfers are free and instant. Punters often use the method to fund their account or take the money out of their account, which Bovada endorses. These transactions are usually advertised and agreed upon via posts made on the Bovada Community.
The bookie is highly transparent with its payment methods. The Help Center contains detailed information about every option, including deposit and withdrawal limits, processing times, and fees. I could also check out step-by-step guides with detailed descriptions and screenshots.
When users make a withdrawal, Bovada will send them a text message with a transaction ID and verification code for added security. This code needs to be used to complete the transaction. The status of the withdrawal request can be checked by clicking on “Pending Withdrawal(s)” below the account balance. In this section, you can also cancel the withdrawal if it wasn’t processed or reduce the amount you wish to pay out.
Betting Variety
Bovada has separate categories for 25 distinct sports, including Esports and virtual sports. Available Esports titles are Call of Duty, Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, League of Legends, Halo, Rainbow Six, and Valorant. The bookie also has an “Other Sports” category, which, at the time of the review, only contained lacrosse. Punters can place novelty bets on entertainment and politics. These options consisted of award winners, current events, celebrity specials, and election outcomes.

For core sports like football, soccer, and basketball, the bookie includes friendlies, preseason games, and women’s leagues. You will also find satisfying coverage of matches from lower-tier leagues and youth competitions.
Bovada prioritizes American competition in the sports menus. You’ll get MLB at the top when you select baseball, and NBA or WNBA when you select basketball. However, there is no option available to pin your favorite leagues at the top of the menu.
The selection of markets at Bovada is underwhelming, at least compared to other offshore bookies. Top events have between 130 and 160 markets, and others have between 50 and 70 markets. There is a market counter provided for each matchup and a filter to only view one type of bet. The selection includes alternate lines, game props, team props, player props, and a wide range of game specials. You’ll also find period markets for each half, quarter, or period, depending on the sport.
Users can place cross-sport outright parlays. They can also use the “Prop Builder” tool to combine props from the same game or create combos from different matchups and sports. However, this tool is mainly available for popular events.
The bookmaker offers pre-made “Daily Specials” for major sports. For example, I could place an over/under wager on the number of goals scored in all matches played on a particular day or bet that three particular teams will each win their matchup.
Live Betting and Streaming
Bovada’s in-play platform has an impressive coverage, with almost all pre-match sports offered for live betting. It is available 24/7 and includes preseason tournaments, women’s competition, lower divisions, and youth leagues. For example, I could place a wager on MLB games, soccer matches from Women’s U19 Liga MX, and volleyball contests from Guatemala’s Liga Ascenso.
Flagship soccer matches have around 70 live markets available. This included spreads, totals, game and player props, and combo props. The bookie also offers “10 minute markets.” This option gave me the opportunity to predict whether there will be a goal in the next 10 minutes, the team that will score it, and totals on goals, cards, and corners.
The odds are slow to update on most events. Once you add a market to your slip, the bookie will warn you if it increases or decreases. However, there is no option to automatically accept or reject changing odds.
Competitions | Live Betting | Live Streaming |
---|---|---|
You’ll have an option to cash out your live bets. It is only available for selected events and is regularly removed as the match progresses. The sportsbook only offers a full cash out, and there is no auto cash out feature.
Bovada has a limited live streaming function. I could only watch Esports matches through the embedded Twitch feed. It would automatically start whenever I clicked on an event. No other in-play event had this option. Instead, they were presented with either a basic scoreboard or animated match-trackers. The latter was only available for selected matches like WNBA games.
Bonuses and Promotions
Bovada offers a welcome bonus for new users in the form of the first deposit match. The bookie will reward you with 50% of the amount in bonus funds up to $250. The minimum deposit amount to claim it is $20. It doesn’t require a promo code. The bonus is credited to the account and available for wagering within 30 minutes. It is subject to a 5x rollover requirement. The full amount of stake counts towards rollover only on losing bets. For winning wagers, the bookie takes the lesser amount between the stake and the profit. Voucher deposits are ineligible for this offer.
The sportsbook also offers a special welcome bonus for crypto deposits. It requires a promo code, which is specified in the description of the promotion. New users can get 75% match on their first deposit up to $750. Tokens eligible for this bonus are Bitcoin, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, USDT, and Bitcoin SV Deposit. It is subject to a 5x rollover requirement. Any withdrawal made before the terms and conditions are met will result in forfeiting the bonus and winnings associated with it.
Bovada doesn’t have many ongoing promotions that are available to all users. The only one for sports betting I could find was ”Parlay Booster.” I needed to place a bet on a “Boosted Parlay Odd” and complete a deposit of at least $10 in the past 7 days. This allowed me a chance to enter a weekly draw and get a chance to win reward points. These points can be exchanged for bonus cash.
The bookie also has a loyalty program called “Bovada Rewards.” Users are automatically enrolled upon registration. With each bet you make, you receive reward points. The amount of points depends on the stake and wager type:
- Singles – $1 equals two points
- Parlays – $1 equals 15 points
- Teasers – $1 equals 25 points
- Round robins – $1 equals 25 points
- Horse racing straight wagers – $1 equals 40 points
- Horse racing exotics/multiples – $1 equals 60 points
Bovada Rewards consists of six tiers, with each tier offering a more favorable rate for exchanging points for bonus cash. To climb the tiers, you need to reach a certain number of points. At the first level, called Starter, 2,500 points can be exchanged for $1. At the highest level, called the Hall of Fame, 1,000 points is worth $1 in bonus cash.
Website
Bovada’s website is simplistic in design and looks outdated. White is the predominant color, the font is basic, and the platform features minimal graphics. The only icons featured on the site are ones for sports categories. Teams don’t have badges, and there are no flags to indicate a country. There is no option to switch between light and dark themes. One positive of this design is that there are no distractions, and I liked the fact that the page isn’t full of banners and ads.
The website is slow to load, and using it can be frustrating. There is a waiting period each time you click on a different section, sport, or event. Sometimes it doesn’t register clicks or simply refreshes by itself.
The sports menu on the left contains “trending events” for the day. In order to get all the events from a particular sport, you need to select it first. The sports categories are conveniently placed in the header. Baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, football, and golf are highlighted. To access other categories, you need to click on “All Sports.”
Once you select the sport you prefer, you will have the opportunity to filter out events based on time left before they start or a specific date. There is also an option to select a bet type and have it shown on the main page for all events. However, this only works if you select a particular sport. The predictive search box makes navigation a lot easier. You only need to start writing the name of the competition, team, or athlete to start getting all the markets associated with it.
A bet slip isn’t convenient as it interferes with sports categories if you add more than one market. The only solution is to minimize it. The Account menu freezes the rest of the page when clicked.
Bovada doesn’t offer a distinct section for results or stats. Instead, you can only get limited information when you click on the event. It includes head-to-head records and recent results.
Mobile Betting
Bovada doesn’t offer native iOS or Android apps. The only available mobile betting method is visiting the bookmaker’s website on your mobile browser.
Mobile Web App
The mobile version of Bovada’s site is designed to resemble an app. It works smoothly, and I haven’t experienced any crashes while testing it. However, it also has slow loading times like the desktop version and delays when switching between different pages.
The footer features icons for the bet slip, sports, live section, and search option. This makes navigation easier, as you need only three taps to reach any league. The bet slip menu doesn’t open up automatically when you click on a market. This is a good thing because it covers the entire screen. The same thing happens when you click on the account menu.
Security & Data Protection
Bovada uses TLS 1.3 encryption to protect users’ data. This security protocol is considered significantly superior compared to TLS 1.2, which is still used by most websites.
The bookie also allows punters to set up two-factor authentication (2-FA) and increase the protection of their accounts. The option can be found in the account menu under the “Security” tab. After you turn it on, you’ll need to link an authenticator app. Once enabled, 2-FA will require you to enter a code, provided by the app, each time you want to withdraw funds, update your profile, or change your password.
Bovada also runs a “Bug Bounty” program. If users notice any bugs, weaknesses, or other issues with the website, they can report them in exchange for a reward.
Betting Tools & Features
Punters receive access to various betting tools and features when they register an account with Bovada. The most notable ones are Bovada Community, Refer-A-Friend, and Cash Out.
Bovada Community
Bovada Community is a forum-like section of the website where punters can interact with each other. They can engage in discussions about different topics, ask questions, share their bets, provide predictions and tips, and submit suggestions and comments about the bookie. Users often use this feature to agree to Player Transfer or Voucher transactions. It is also the place where the bookmaker posts notices about important updates.
Refer-A-Friend
Bovada will reward you for each friend you bring to the sportsbook. If you want to take advantage of this, you need to share your unique referral link, which can be found in the “Refer-A-Friend” tab, with your friends. They need to click on it and register a new account.
When they make their first deposit, you will receive 200% of the amount in the form of bonus funds. They need to deposit at least $20, and the most you can get is $200. The bookmaker will give you an additional $75 bonus if your friend funds their account using cryptocurrency.
Cash Out
Bovada’s cash out feature allows you to settle your wager and get a payout while the event is still underway. The amount of money you can get depends on whether your bet is winning or losing. This feature can be used for pre-match and live bets, but isn’t available for all sports and events. The bookmaker only offers full cash out. Partial cash out and auto cash out options are unavailable.

Bovada’s Responsible Gambling (RG) section is linked in the footer of the website, which is accessible at all times. The bookie also includes a special message dedicated to responsible gambling at the bottom of the page, with a second link for the RG section. The same placement can be found on the mobile version of the site.
The section features a statement on the prevention of underage gambling and advice on parental controls. The bookie shares tips on RG practices, a description of problem gambling, a self-assessment test, and a list of non-profit organizations like Gamblers Anonymous, National Council on Problem Gambling, and Gambling Therapy.
Bovada has a dedicated page for self-exclusion. It is linked in the footer of the website. However, it only contains information that users can reach out to customer support and request to have their account disabled. There is no tool for self-exclusion or even a link to contact the support team right away. Punters are unable to set deposit or bet limits, and the sportsbook doesn’t send session reminders or flag excessive losses.
Customer Support
Bovada’s customer support, which is available in English and Spanish, is difficult to reach. There is no Live Chat button or shortcut you can use. Instead, the only way to get the available options is to visit the Help Center and click on one of the subjects. Next, you need to scroll to the bottom, find the “Did you find what you were looking for?” question, and click “No.” Only then will you be presented with contact options.

You can contact the customer support via email or live chat. The response time for email is 48 hours, but the live chat option will connect you with an agent in five to seven minutes.
My personal experience with customer support was positive. I waited less than a minute to get connected with an agent. They were friendly, responsive, and ready to help. However, before they could assist me, I needed to provide my PIN and date of birth. After our chat ended, I had the option to rate the interaction.
Bovada also provides a comprehensive Help Center, where you can find answers to frequently asked questions. You can browse FAQs according to categories or find a specific one using the search option. It also includes video tutorials for making deposits, changing passwords, claiming bonuses, and more.
Betting Information Section
The Help Center doesn’t just provide solutions for common issues. It is a valuable source of betting information and beginner-friendly guides. You can learn about different wager types, find explanations about odds/lines, read about sports and betting rules, and go through a list of sports terminology. The bookie also provides step-by-step tutorials, practical examples, and screenshots.
For more content, you can visit the Bovada Hub blog. It can be accessed through the account menu. You’ll find sports news, previews, predictions, analysis, and content dedicated to casino games. It is unclear how often the blog is updated, because the posts don’t contain dates. The names of the authors are also omitted.
What Bettors Say About Bovada
Bovada has mixed reviews from bettors. Some users on Reddit and TrustPilot complain about the slow website, withdrawal delays, and blocked accounts. Others praise fast crypto transactions, ease of use, reliability, and selection of props.
On TrustPilot, Bovada has a TrustScore of 1.5 out of 1,259 reviews. The positive thing is that the bookie replied to 99% of negative reviews within a week. It is rated higher than most of its competitors in the US. FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM have a 1.2 TrustScore, while BetRivers scored 1.3. Only PointsBet performed better with a 3.4 TrustScore.
Besides Betting
Bovada offers its users casino and poker platforms. The casino platform consists of slots, jackpots, table games, roulette, specialty games, and video poker. The slots section has 470+ games from providers like Real Time Gaming, Rival Powered, and Qora Games. Gamblers can also play live dealer games, including blackjack, three-card poker, and roulette.
The poker platform doesn’t require a client and can be used through the website. It offers cash games, knockout tournaments, and standard and jackpot sit & go (SNG) tournaments.
